What are some discussion points when considering adoption?

It is important for couples to have open communication while considering adoption. The adoption process is a long, emotional path, but well worth it!

The couple should discuss freely with each other the topic points that apply to them:

  • Are you exhausted from trying to conceive on your own or through medical treatment?
  • Are frustrations with trying to conceive hindering your relationship as a couple?
  • Does it matter how a child becomes a part of your family?
  • Have you had adequate time to grieve the loss of the child you hoped to conceive?
  • Are you willing to make themselves vulnerable to the judgments of adoption agencies?
  • Do each of you feel that adoption is a positive decision?
If a couple decides on adoption, the next step is to look for an agency. It is important to find a reputable group that works advantageously for everyone involved and not just the client that is paying the fees. Couples can find agencies online, through their lawyer, pastor, church, or acquaintances that have already chosen the adoption process. The reputation of an agency can be verified through the Better Business Bureau.

While you are considering adoption, you might also consider other ways to make a difference in the life of a child. Through a child sponsorship program such as Compassion International, there are thousands of children for adoption right now. Although this isn’t a formal adoption, your monthly financial and spiritual commitment is a powerful way to make a true difference in a child’s life.
