What should I look for when selecting a gastric bypass surgeon?
You should always look for a gastric bypass surgeon who has experience. Research online and find out what their standings are and read testimonials from their patients. Many surgeons have them on their home page. Look for the programs available pre- and post-op as well. My surgeon offered everything from support groups to post-op cooking classes once a month free of cost!
In my opinion, the most important thing to look for when selecting a surgeon is the attitude in which the office views the surgery. You want a surgeon and staff who look at this surgery as a new beginning for the patient, as a life change, not just another procedure. Try to find someone who offers classes that teach you how to cope with the changes that you will be encountering, not just physically, but emotionally as well.
The surgeon that I was blessed to have, required three classes which focused on the physiological, psychological, and sociological situations that a gastric bypass patient would encounter. These classes taught me how to deal with my body, my family and friends, and most importantly with myself -- how I see myself and how others see me. These were all included in the cost of the surgery.
When I was first informed that these things would be required of me, I was skeptical and even a little angry. They sounded like a waste of my time. I wanted to hurry up and get on with my life. However, I have used each and every one of the little tips and tricks that those classes taught me, and I even made some good friends. Over a year later, I am still reaping the benefits of the things that my surgeon saw fit to make sure I knew ahead of time. I feel happy and well adjusted. I believe that the attitude of my surgeon and his staff really helped me cope with my changing life.
This surgery is not just surgery. It is the beginning of a brand new life for you and for those around you. It is important to have a surgeon who recognizes this and believes in helping you use all the tools available to you.
