Workaholics Marriage

QUESTION: Workaholics marriage - What are the dangers and remedies?

ANSWER:

Are you one-half of a workaholic’s marriage? Have you wondered why you have drifted apart from your spouse? Have you felt like you don’t connect with your spouse anymore? Do you feel like you pass in the hallway of your home and as you are running out the door, you shout hello and goodbye to each other? It’s time to stop and take a look at what is happening.

Workaholics Marriage – The Dangers
Some of the dangers of a workaholic marriage are:

  • Loneliness can lead to finding someone else to fill that emptiness. It may start as a casual friendship at work, but will lead to a deeper friendship, where you begin to share more and more personal things. Eventually, you stop communicating with your spouse all together. The end result is often adultery.
  • Busyness takes priority over spending time with your spouse, family, and friends. There is no time for God.
  • There is a lack of interest in things that used to bring you happiness.
  • Oftentimes, health problems and fatigue become an issue.
  • Mental health problems and stress become apparent.

Workaholics Marriage – The Remedies
How can you turn it around? What are some remedies that have worked?

  • Set apart time to spend with your spouse every day. This is non-negotiable. Without face to face time together, you won’t feel connected.
  • Make sure God is at the center of your marriage. Pray before making decisions and seek His will.
  • Be open and honest with your spouse. Share things that are troubling. Genuinely ask about your spouse’s day.
  • Establish certain nights when dinner together with your entire family is non-negotiable. Turn off disturbances such as the TV, newspaper, and radio.
  • Have special date nights with your spouse at least once a month. Use the time to rekindle the romance. Celebrate the things that drew you together in the first place.
  • Set apart quiet time with God each day.
  • Make sure you take one day a week to rest and relax. Rest is important. The down time is important for the body to recharge.

What do you think?
We have all sinned and deserve God’s judgment. God, the Father, sent His only Son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him. Jesus, the creator and eternal Son of God, who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buried, and rose from the dead according to the Bible. If you truly believe and trust this in your heart, receiving Jesus alone as your Savior, declaring, "Jesus is Lord," you will be saved from judgment and spend eternity with God in heaven.

What is your response?

Yes, I want to follow Jesus

I am a follower of Jesus
