Porn Addiction

Porn Addiction - What is Porn Addiction?
Porn addiction is a particular subcategory of sexual addiction. In porn addiction, the primary focus of the addiction is on pornographic literature or images. Porn addiction is referred to as a "process" addiction where the euphoric feeling - or high - comes from chemicals released into the brain, rather than from an external source like drugs or alcohol. The mind gradually becomes accustomed to the release of these chemicals, it searches out for continued sources of that high. For the porn addict, this high comes from the visual stimulus of looking at pornographic magazines, movies, books, or web sites. This stimulus is usually, but not always, accompanied by masturbation.

Pornography is defined as obscene literature or art. So what is obscene? Obscene is defined as offensive to decency. So what is decency? As you can see, this could go on and on. This is why obscenity laws in the United States have been very difficult to enforce. For our purposes, we will define pornography as any written, drawn (including digital graphics), or photographic material that is intended to cause sexual stimulation. So by this definition, anything that is sexually titillating can be termed pornography. The intent of this definition is to look at the impact of pornography on the individual, rather than to provide any type of legal framework for the control of these materials.

Porn Addiction - What causes Porn Addiction?
As with sexual addiction, porn addiction is rarely caused by only one factor, but is more likely a building up of conditions over time. Causes could include exposure to pornographic images at a young age, deep seated insecurity and/or fear of rejection in relationships, or past trauma such as physical and/or sexual abuse. In addition to these causes, porn addiction feeds on itself, and is progressive in nature. A person becomes desensitized to the images that are being seen, and constantly needs more new images. In addition, once exposed to the more graphic depictions of sexual activity, simple nudity is no longer as exciting. In some cases, this progression into harder pornography can lead to illegal activities such as violent porn or child pornography.

Porn Addiction - Why is it a Problem?
The problem with porn addiction is mostly one of altered perception. Continued exposure to pornography changes the user's view of the people around them. Men using pornography tend to see women as sexual objects rather than as valuable people to be honored and respected. In a marriage relationship, pornography can drive a wedge between the man and wife. Although it may be used initially to add "excitement" to the marriage, the progressive nature of pornography can lead a relationship down paths that one partner may not wish to travel.

Porn Addiction - What's Next?
The first thing to do is to determine if your use of pornography has become an addiction. The sexual addiction website contains several questions to help you determine if you have a problem. If you have a problem, get help at any of the many sources available. This could include getting filtered internet access (either by your internet provider or through a third party filter) or counseling with a Christian counselor experienced in sexual addiction issues. And, most importantly, seek the hope that your life can change in a positive way.

What do you think?
We have all sinned and deserve God’s judgment. God, the Father, sent His only Son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him. Jesus, the creator and eternal Son of God, who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buried, and rose from the dead according to the Bible. If you truly believe and trust this in your heart, receiving Jesus alone as your Savior, declaring, "Jesus is Lord," you will be saved from judgment and spend eternity with God in heaven.

What is your response?

Yes, I want to follow Jesus

I am a follower of Jesus

I still have questions

How can I know God?
